BATTERY BLUFF PARK - THE PRESIDIO - SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Battery Bluff Park is a 6-acre public park in San Francisco, part of the ex-Army base The Presidio
- a glorious area all on its own. It overlooks The Golden Gate Bridge and Crissy Field, is opposite
San Francisco National Cemetery, and is open to the public for the first time.
The Park is located partly on top of tunnels through which runs the Presidio Parkway that connects
to the Bridge. The brief given to my client, Page Southerland Page, included the need to preserve the
big cement gun batteries that were in use from the 1898 until 1920, when it was abandoned.
Native plants and generous paths, seating areas, and multi-use spaces are at the heart of the project.
The view took care of itself.
Page was also responsible for some of the planning and landscape architecture leading from areas
near the Bridge, to a pocket park across the street from Battery Bluff devoted to people who served
in the Korean War, and east to the remarkable domed Palace Of Fine Arts, which dates from 1915.
