The Manicini Institute.
The month-long Summer Program for Emerging Professionals took
place at UCLA every summer for nine years, until, unhappily for
everyone involved, it closed in 2006.
These photos were taken during the final session in 2005, although
no one knew that at the time. The idea, as exemplified by the work
of Institute's namesake, composer and songwriter Henry Mancini,
was to combine jazz and classical music in theory and practice.
I documented the eighty-five young musicians in rehearsal,
being mentored, and in performance at Royce Hall.
